Taking Zinc Daily Could Actually Help You Do Better At Jiu-Jitsu

Published:

If you train jiu-jitsu seriously you know the toll that intense rolling sessions can take on your body. Hours on the mat leave you exhausted and recovery becomes just as important as the training itself. A research paper suggests that a simple mineral supplement could make a significant difference in how your body responds to these grueling workouts.

A study published in Neuro Endocrinology Letters examined elite wrestlers who supplemented with zinc sulfate for four weeks. The researchers, led by Mehmet Kilic, studied 10 male wrestlers with at least six years of competitive experience. These athletes took 3 mg per kilogram of body weight daily while maintaining their normal diet and training regimen.

The findings revealed something remarkable. When athletes trained to exhaustion without zinc supplementation their testosterone levels dropped significantly. The same pattern emerged with thyroid hormones which regulate metabolism and energy production. However after four weeks of zinc supplementation both resting and post exercise testosterone levels increased substantially compared to measurements taken before supplementation began.

The thyroid hormone results proved equally compelling. Before zinc supplementation exhausting exercise caused notable decreases in TT3 TT4 FT3 FT4 and TSH levels. After four weeks of supplementation both resting and post exhaustion levels of TT3 TT4 and FT3 rose significantly higher than pre supplementation measurements.

For jiu-jitsu practitioners these results carry practical implications. Testosterone plays a vital role in muscle recovery strength development and overall athletic performance. Thyroid hormones govern energy metabolism helping your body function efficiently during intense physical demands. When hard training suppresses these hormones recovery slows and performance declines.

The study demonstrates that physiological doses of zinc can prevent the hormone suppression that typically follows exhausting exercise. This means better recovery between training sessions maintained energy levels and potentially improved performance on the mat.

The wrestlers in this study took approximately 3 mg of zinc per kilogram of body weight. For a 176 lbs 80 kg athlete that translates to roughly 240 mg daily. The researchers concluded that administering zinc at physiological doses may benefit athletic performance by maintaining healthy hormone levels even during periods of intense training.

While this research focused on wrestlers the physical demands of jiu-jitsu training create similar hormonal challenges. The constant physical effort technique drilling and live sparring sessions mirror the exhaustion protocols used in the study making these findings particularly relevant for serious practitioners looking to optimize their training and recovery.
