Justin Gaethje defeated Paddy Pimblett at UFC 324 to win the interim lightweight strap.
That means “The Highlight” will move on to challenge reigning 155-pound kingpin, Ilia Topuria, in a title unification bout at some point later this year. Based on Gaethje’s performance against the grapple-free Pimblett, sportsbooks set a lopsided opening line for his future “El Matador” fight.
Matt Brown perfectly recapped the UFC 324 main event.
“That was one of the most entertaining ‘championship’ fights I’ve ever seen,” the retired UFC welterweight wrote on X. “But I’ve seen better technique at local shows. No hate! I’m just saying!”
Gaethje opened at +400 against -600 for Topuria, according to BetOnline.ag.
“Justin, all I can say is congratulations,” Topuria said online. “And I’d like to tell you to get ready, but you’re screwed no matter what.”
It’s worth noting that Gaethje (27-5) was also an underdog against Pimblett.
No word yet on when Topuria (17-0) plans on making his Octagon return. The former featherweight champion is currently dealing with a messy divorce and the custody of his daughter so he may remain out of action for the next few months — which could place his return at the UFC White House event (as requested).
Stay tuned.
