Blink-182 Drummer Travis Barker Started Training Jiu-jitsu Under Jean Jacques Machado

Published:

Travis Barker is known for being the legendary Blink-182 drummer. He’s also a longtime UFC superfan. Barker got some backlash for being a part of UFC 324 media package.

But that didn’t sour his experience. He recently opened up about his martial arts training during an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show. While discussing his involvement in UFC 324, Barker revealed his dedication to Brazilian jiu-jitsu and how it fits into his rigorous fitness routine.

When asked about his martial arts training, Barker explained his current focus.

“I was doing a lot of jiu-jitsu right before I got hurt.”

The musician disclosed that he trains at Jean Jacques Machado‘s gym, which is conveniently located near his home.

“Jean Jacques Machado has a spot right down the street from me and I would always run by his gym and I ran into him at the coffee spot I go to all the time and I just rolled in one day and started training again.”

The training sessions are intensive and personalized.

“I do privates with him.”

“Hour and a half, two hour sessions and he’s right down the street, so it can work with my schedule at the studio.”

When pressed to choose between jiu-jitsu and boxing, Barker provided insight into why both disciplines are essential to his routine.

“I mean, jiu-jitsu is like such a mental game where you have to do a lot of thinking and remembering and then striking”

“Fast trigger is really important for drumming. So, I need both honestly.”

Unfortunately, Barker’s jiu-jitsu training has been temporarily halted. While training for the LA Marathon, he developed stress fractures on his tibia from doing too much too fast with a weighted vest. The injury has forced him to modify his training regimen, replacing his usual five to ten mile daily runs with battle rope exercises, assault bike work, rowing and boxing from a seated position to avoid weight bearing activities.

Despite never competing in wrestling or grappling contests, Barker hinted at future possibilities.

“I think maybe as I get further in jiu-jitsu, it would be fun.”

Barker’s commitment to martial arts extends beyond personal training. He maintains close friendships with several MMA stars, including Dominick Cruz, whom he sponsored during Cruz’s rivalry with Urijah Faber, and Marlon “Chito” Vera. These relationships have given him firsthand understanding of the dedication required at the highest levels of combat sports.

“Enough fighter friends to know how hard it is and how talented and how much hard work goes into everything that they do.”
