Anthony Joshua ‘rescued alive’ following fatal car crash on December 29

Published:

Anthony Joshua returned to professional boxing on December 19, stopping Jake Paul in the sixth round of their clash on Netflix.

Just 10 days after that victory, reports have surfaced that Joshua has been injured in a car crash, while in Nigeria.

Anthony Joshua injured in Nigeria car crash

Early reports on the incident tell us that the crash that killed two others happened on the Ogun–Lagos state expressway on December 29. The BBC are reporting that Joshua has been taken to hospital, with minor injuries, but is said to be fine.

Local media are reporting that five adult males were in the vehicle, including AJ. The vehicle carrying the five adults is said to have struck a stationary truck. The Federal Road Safety Corps in Nigeria have confirmed a Lexus Jeep involved in the incident was suspected to be travelling “beyond the legally prescribed speed limit.”

The identities of the two deceased has yet to be confirmed.

What’s next for Anthony Joshua?

It remains to be seen what’s next for Joshua. His win over Paul was set to be a prelude to a busy 2026, culminating in a superfight against Tyson Fury.

At the time of writing, Joshua’s injuries are unknown, but it’s clearly a setback for the former two-time unified heavyweight champion of the world.

Many outlets are releasing photos from the scene, which paint a disturbing picture, and show just how lucky Joshua was to escape with his life intact.

Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn told Daily Mail Sport: “We are trying to contact Anthony and in the meantime we don’t want to speculate on how he is but thankfully he appears okay from what I have seen in the images.

“We are awaiting more information on what has happened and will update in due course.”

More details will likely be confirmed in the coming days
