Living up to her status as the baddest woman on the planet, Amanda Nunes stood tall following Sean Strickland‘s vulgar comments earlier this week.
It came as no surprise to anyone when Strickland took the microphone during UFC Houston media day and began spouting controversial statements. As he often does, the 34-year-old managed to offend many, ‘The Lioness’ being one of those insulted by the remarks.
Sean Strickland touched on several subjects, sharing his undesirable views on fellow fighters and world events. Strickland happily disparaged female athletes, with UFC star Amanda Nunes among those targeted.
“Not many people give a f*** about women’s MMA in general, you know?” Strickland said. “It’s like the WNBA. No one gives a f*** about women’s sports. Like, who cares? You’re watching two f***ing chicks.”
“You take the weakest, softest motherf***er here, and you guys would beat up Amanda Nunes. The fat guy in the Hawaiian shirt. No offense, dude. I like you, but you would f*** up Amanda Nunes any day of the week. Any day of the week.
Amanda Nunes is widely regarded as the greatest women’s mixed martial artist of all time, with many arguing her case as the best, regardless of gender. The Brazilian has a resume that is as good as they come, with championship wins and dominance in two divisions to back it up.
To discredit a fighter on the level of Nunes is nonsensical, but that didn’t stop Sean Strickland from diminishing her and all other women’s abilities in the sport. Srickland’s comments didn’t sit well with Nunes, who was quick to defend herself and her peers who’ve worked hard to reach the positions they hold in combat sports.
“We do everything he said,” Nunes said in response to Strickland. “And to top it all off, we’re fighters too. Girl power. Don’t cry.”
