Terence Crawford couldn’t contain his amusement when learning of the UFC’s rule to install a weight limit for their heavyweights.
During an appearance on his podcast, Terence Crawford and host Joe Rogan burst into laughter when discussing one of the UFC’s long-held rules. Despite agreeing that weight classes are essential in all combat sports, Rogan and Crawford both believe that the heavyweights should be given free rein to enter the octagon however they wish.
“The UFC has a heavyweight limit,” Rogan explained to Crawford, who guest-starred on the JRE podcast. “Do you know how crazy that is? Isn’t that stupid? It’s stupid, right?”
Terence Crawford was unaware of the restraint put in place for UFC heavyweights, agreeing with Joe Rogan that it was an unnecessary boundary to be forced to follow.
Using boxers as an example, Rogan attempted to convince listeners how ignorant the rule is.
“265 [lbs]. You have to weigh 265,” Rogan continued. “So, think about Tyson Fury. When Tyson Fury fought Deontay [Wilder], he was like 280, 285. Imagine he’s got to dehydrate himself. He’s got to lose 20 f***ing pounds just to make the weight class. That’s ret**ded. That doesn’t make any sense at all. At all. It’s the heavyweights.”
“Remember [Nikolai] Valuev when he was fighting Evander Holyfield. Oh my god. He had to be over 300 pounds. He was [gigantic]. He was a literal giant, an actual giant.”
Shocked by the bizarre rule, Crawford urged Rogan to discuss his concerns with those above him. Despite being a pillar in the growth of mixed martial arts, Rogan revealed that his ideas are never considered by Dana White.
“Nobody listens to me, bro,” Rogan said. “They don’t. They don’t listen to me. They think I’m crazy… Oh, I have a bunch of wacky rules that I want to institute. So, I understand why they don’t want to listen to me.”
“I would throw the whole sport up in the air.”
