‘Who else Is there to fight?’ – Eddie Hearn questions Vergil Ortiz Jr regarding Jaron Ennis fight

Published:

The super welterweight division continues to be one of the most exciting in the sport. The current champions are Sebastian Fundora, Xander Zayas, Bakhram Murtazaliev, and Abass Baraou. Zayas and Baraou are set to meet in a unification bout on January 31. Away from the champions, one fight that has been rumoured for some time has been Vergil Ortiz Jr vs Jaron Ennis.

Eddie Hearn has been vocal about his desire to make the fight, and when speaking to Fight Hub TV, Hearn discussed the negotiations and questioned Ortiz’s desire to be the best in the division.

Ortiz vs Ennis – the story so far

Negotiations seem to have stalled since, with Ortiz’s manager, Rick Mirigian, telling BoxingScene that DAZN are insistent that Oscar De La Hoya, and Eddie Hearn strike a deal, with an early spring date rumoured for Las Vegas.

If these two camps can’t make a deal, it would be a crying shame for boxing and specifically American boxing.

It appears Hearn is still determined to make the deal, and said to Fight Hub TV:

“You know, we agreed a deal with Golden Boy and DAZN in a room. We’re speaking to Golden Boy. I believe Golden Boy and Oscar want that fight.

“Who else is there for Ortiz to fight? Errol Spence ain’t gonna take the fight next, and Errol Spence ain’t boxed for two years. The best fight in boxing is Boots against Ortiz, so we hope that Vergil Ortiz is a man that wants a challenge to prove himself as the best in the world. That’s the number one and number two 154-pounders in the world, in my opinion, so let’s make it happen.”
