Former world champion reveals if Oleksandr Usyk is an all-time great

Published:

Hasim Rahman has given his thoughts on Oleksandr Usyk’s position in the all-time rankings.

Rahman won his WBC heavyweight world title in 2001 and sits in good stead to comment on just how good Usyk is.

The Ukrainian has had an incredible career from his amateur successes to his unbeaten professional run.

‘The Cat’ has won almost everything in boxing and Rahman uses that to give an honest verdict if Usyk is one of the greats.

Rahman spoke to Fight Hype.

“I put him in that greatest of all times category. Based on statistics, and what he’s done, I don’t see nobody who matched him.

“All I know is Usyk won a gold medal, the only one who unified four cruiserweight titles then moved up to heavyweight and unified four heavyweight titles.

“That’s never been done. I don’t think people are giving him the credit he deserves.”

Alongside his accolades in terms of medals and titles Usyk has had so many historic nights since turning professional in 2013.

The Ukrainian beat some standout names in the cruiserweight division including Murat Gassiev, Mairis Briedis.

He also has a brutal record against British fighters which he began with a career-ending knockout over Tony Bellew in his last fight at cruiserweight.

The Ukrainians fortunes didn’t change in the heavyweight division where he went to unify all the belts like he did in the cruiserweight rankings.

Usyk picked up some massive wins over names like Derek Chisora and two fantastic stoppages over Daniel Dubois.

Usyk’s two standout opponents have to be Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury who he shared 24 rounds with respectively.

In these fights ‘The Cat’ showed just how skilled he really is comfortably outpointing the pair each fight.

Usyk nearly stopped both Joshua and Fury at points in their fights.

Whatever the 38-year-old chooses to do now won’t affect his legacy that is already stamped into the history books but a return does seem likely to the pleasure of many boxing fans.

Usyk has flirted with a fight against former world champion and knockout artist Deontay Wilder who also seems keen to make the fight a reality at some point in 2026.
