Barrios vs Garcia: British star will be ringside, wants winner

Published:

Conor Benn has confirmed he will be ringside for next month’s WBC welterweight world title showdown between Mario Barrios and Ryan Garcia in Las Vegas.

Barrios defends his WBC crown against Garcia at the T-Mobile Arena on February 21, with Benn in line to face the winner.

‘The Destroyer’ was made mandatory challenger by the WBC, despite having not fought at welterweight in almost three years.

The 29-year-old secured revenge over Chris Eubank Jr in the second of their middleweight meetings having lost on points in their first outing in April.

The Brit insists he’s backing Garcia to dethrone Barrios, who has drawn his last two bouts.

Benn told Sky Sports: “I said I would be WBC champion, it was always the dream, so to be within touching distance and be made mandatory for the WBC world title.

“I’ll be there ringside and I want the winner.

“No doubt it will be Garcia.

“Garcia vs Benn – I like the sound of that.”

Barrios was held to a contentious majority draw against Manny Pacquiao in July, who competed for the first time in almost four years.

Garcia, 27, looks to win a maiden world title and is coming off a comprehensive defeat to WBA champion, Rolly Romero who dropped him on route to a unanimous decision victory at Times Square in May.

Benn’s two clashes with Eubank Jr were staged in front of 70,000 fans at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

’The Destroyer’ admits he’d welcome another stadium bout, although insists he would have no issue travelling to America to win a world title in similar vein to Dalton Smith, who knocked out Subriel Matias to become WBC super lightweight world champion in Brooklyn on Saturday.

“There’s something great about what Dalton Smith did,” he added.

“So I’d love to do it in Las Vegas.

“T-Mobile is on hold for Cinco De Mayo.

“But I feel like I’ve got to bring it here to the UK for the supporters.

“Another stadium fight sounds good, doesn’t it?”
