Eddie Hearn reveals why Oleksandr Usyk is facing Deontay Wilder

Published:

Eddie Hearn has revealed what Oleksandr Usyk told him about a possible fight with Deontay Wilder.

Usyk and Hearn met in Saudi Arabia, where Wilder was discussed.

Ringside at Naoya Inoue vs Alan Picasso, Hearn and the Ukrainian were pictured together and the Matchroom Chairman has revealed what Usyk told him.

‘The Cat’ has been linked with a possible fight against Wilder at some point this year, likely taking place in the United States.

Hearn spoke to Sky Sports Boxing.

“I was with Usyk in Saudi and I said, ‘Deontay Wilder?’ and he said ‘yes.’

“He made a point and said, ‘I want to fight all the people from my generation and the three people who were the key fighters of my era is AJ, Fury and Wilder.’

“I think he’s thinking Wilder on my resume would be nice.”

Since moving up to heavyweight in 2019, Usyk has beaten everyone in his path and is undoubtedly the best heavyweight over the last decade.

He is a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.

The last time Usyk fought was in July where he destroyed Daniel Dubois.

He dropped ‘DDD’ twice and stopped the contest in the fifth round at Wembley Stadium.

“These are the biggest names, and you have to give an honourable mention to Daniel Dubois, but he’s beaten them all twice.”

Wilder, however, has not been as impressive over the last few years.

He last fought in June where he stopped Tyrrell Herndon in the seventh round.

Prior to the Herndon fight, ‘The Bronze Bomber’ came off successive defeats to Zhilei Zhang and Joseph Parker respectively.

Despite his poor form Wilder once ruled the heavyweight division and defended his titles for over four years.

During his run as WBC world champion Wilder stopped nine of 10 opponents he defended against.

His first career loss came to Tyson Fury in 2020 following their epic draw the year before.

Hearn believes Usyk will have too much for the Alabama man.

“Wilder is a big draw, but for me he’s well past his best. I don’t see it as an overly competitive fight.”

An announcement for Usyk vs Wilder appears imminent.
