Archie Sharp aiming to revive Shakur Stevenson rivalry ahead of return

Published:

Archie Sharp is looking to revive his rivalry with Shakur Stevenson, ahead of his return to the ring.

Sharp fights on the undercard of Adam Azim’s clash with Gustavo Lemos at the Copper Box Arena next Saturday, hours before Stevenson challenges Teofimo Lopez for the WBO super lightweight world title in New York.

The pair were previously linked with a potential clash when Stevenson held the WBO super featherweight title and Sharp was the number one contender.

However, the Brit never received his shot and has seen his career derail following back-to-back defeats to Ryan Garner and Maxi Hughes respectively.

The 30-year-old has since moved up to lightweight, where Stevenson holds the WBC title and ‘Sharpshooter’ says he is looking to work his way back into contention.

“Obviously Shakur Stevenson, I don’t know if he’s going to come back to 135,” he told proboxing-fans.com.

“Me and him were back-and-forth for a little while.

“I’d like to pick that back up.

“But first things first, I’ve got to get myself back to Archie Sharp and get myself back to the top.

“So before I can get onto these names, I need to make a statement on the 31st, get back into big title fights again and then I’ll be ready.

“But believe me, the best Archie Sharp is on the way now.”

Sharp will look to get back to winning ways when he faces Angelo Dragone.

The Kent man has linked-up with trainer Mark Tibbs and believes the experienced coach is the man to get the best out of him.

“I’ve known him for a long time and it’s great to be working with him,” he added.

“There’s new things coming out that I forgot.

“I’ve been boxing since I was 7, I’m 30 now.

“I’ve done a lot of things over the years and they’re [Mark and Jimmy Tibbs] seeing it.

“So what they’re doing is they’re bringing it out to kind of make the best Archie Sharp.

“They’re seeing things that they want me to work on, stuff that I can do and tweaking a couple of things.”
