‘Smashing Machine’ bags Oscar nomination for UFC movie — but ‘The Rock’ snubbed for Best Actor

Published:

Dwayne Johnson was not one of the best actors of 2025, according to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Sorry, Dana.

Johnson, 53, starred as former UFC fighter Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine, which bagged an Oscar nomination for “Best Makeup and Hairstyling.“ Prosthetic designer Kazu Hiro was responsible for transforming Johnson into the younger version of Kerr, now 57.

“The Smashing Machine was a project that required total trust, patience, and empathy from everyone involved, and I’m thankful to be recognized alongside such incredible artists,” Hiro said (via MMA Fighting). “I share this recognition with our director Benny Safdie, the talented Dwayne Johnson, and the entire filmmaking team.”

The Smashing Machine competes against Frankenstein, Sinners, and The Ugly Stepsister for the coveted Oscar.

“I’m also thankful to my makeup and prosthetics team, whose craftsmanship and dedication made this work possible,” Hiro added. “To be acknowledged by the Academy is incredibly meaningful to me, and I’m sincerely grateful.”

Despite its early buzz, The Smashing Machine was a monumental flop at the box office.
