Authorities: Anthony Joshua vehicle traveling ‘beyond speed limit’ before fatal crash, lost control during ‘overtaking maneuver’

Published:

New details are starting to emerge following the fatal car wreck involving boxing superstar Anthony Joshua.

“AJ” was a passenger in a vehicle traveling “beyond the legally prescribed speed limit” before colliding with “a stationary truck” during an “overtaking maneuver” on Monday morning near Lagos in Nigeria.

That’s according to a new report from BBC News.

In total, five adult males were involved in the crash. Two were killed while another two escaped unhurt. Joshua was “rescued alive and sustained minor injuries” but taken to a nearby hospital for “medical attention.“

Joshua, 36, was on his way to visit family in Sagamu.

The Lagos-Ibadan expressway has been described as “one of Nigeria’s deadliest roads.”

“We are hoping for his speedy recovery and also the people who passed away, I pray for the departed to rest in peace,” a relative told BBC. “He’s normally coming around for the New Year. We haven’t seen him so we were expecting him.”

The former two-time heavyweight boxing champion is fresh off his sixth-round knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami. “AJ” was planning to make his “sweet science” return in early 2026; however, those plans may change following Monday’s tragic car accident.
