BJJ purple belt gets DQ-ed for vomiting at IBJJF Europeans

Published:

In what may be one of the most unfortunate disqualifications in competitive Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu history, Atos purple belt Jared Wade saw his European Championship run come to an abrupt end after losing his lunch mid match.

The 26 year old competitor was in a winning position with approximately 40 seconds remaining when the incident occurred, forcing the referee to call off the bout and award his opponent the victory by disqualification under IBJJF rules.

Wade, who has previously earned silver medals at both the World and Pan Championships, took to social media to address the unexpected turn of events with remarkable candor and humor.

“Today I competed at the IBJJF European Championships and unfortunately got disqualified after throwing up mid match. I was winning with about 40 seconds left, so it’s a tough way for it to end. I felt good physically and wasn’t fatigued, but I guess stuff just happens out of your control.”

Despite the disappointment, Wade maintained his characteristic authenticity, choosing to share the experience rather than hide it.

“I’ll be honest this was one of the toughest losses to take, but would rather be real and authentic on social media than just show the highs.”

The response from the Jiu-Jitsu community has been largely supportive, though many questioned his opponent’s enthusiastic celebration given the circumstances.

“Imagine being the other guy and CELEBRATING for that win. “

Others could relate to Wade‘s predicament.

“That happened to me my first ever comp match because i drank too much water.”

Ever the entrepreneur, Wade turned the experience into an opportunity, promoting his merch.

For now, Wade remains focused on moving forward.

“It hurts to lose this way, but all I can do is keep working and keep improving. Grateful for everyone who tuned in and continues to support my journey. On to the next.”
