Canelo Alvarez opens up on Terence Crawford rematch frustrations

Published:

On September 13, 2025, at Allegiant Stadium, Terence Crawford (42-0, 31 KOs) defeated Canelo Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs) by unanimous decision.

That historic victory saw Crawford become a three-division undisputed champion and four-division lineal champion. He decided to retire at the end of 2025, instead of facing Canelo or any other opponent. Canelo has appeared on the Mr Verzace Podcast with Rick Reeno, discussing his frustration at not getting his opportunity to rematch “Bud.”

Terence Crawford beats Canelo Alvarez to become the undisputed king

It was a relatively cagey start to Canelo-Crawford, with Crawford moving well and Canelo landing nothing more than an occasional hook.

“Bud” soon found his groove and picked his shots impressively, while staying elusive to avoid Canelo’s counters.

Crawford continued to box with poise to the final bell, and even began sitting down on his shots more towards the end of the fight. “Bud” deserved to win the fight, and the judges’ scorecards made sure the right man had his hand raised with  cards of 116-112 and 115-113 (x2).

Canelo Alvarez discusses Terence Crawford rematch frustration

Talking to Reeno, Canelo revealed his frustration at not getting the rematch:

“I always give all of his credit. But we need to run it back. After the fight, I say we need to run back this fight, because I don’t feel the way I really want, and I need to make this fight happen again. And it’s going to be different.

I think for him to deserve all the credit, he need to give me the rematch. But oh well, he decide to retire, and we need to accept that and move forward,” said Canelo.

Turki Alalshikh recently announced that Canelo Alvarez will be back in action on September 12 as part of the “Mexico against The World” card in Riyadh.

It remains to be seen what the Mexican has left, but listening to him talk to Reeno, it seems the desire still burns inside him despite all his achievements.
