Enjoy not fighting in the Octagon.
But one fighter managed to steal the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.
Lightweight David Goldenberg picked up a unanimous decision win over De’Aundre Tipton on the main card in what can generously be described as an uneventful fight. Unfortunately for Goldenberg, the bout itself wasn’t what people were talking about — his post-fight interview was.
With UFC CEO Dana White in attendance to watch a UFC employee compete, Goldenberg decided it was time to shoot his shot. Poorly.
“Hey Sean Shelby, Hunter Campbell, and who’s the third Musketeer, the bald guy kind of looks like a bloated Mr. Clean?” Goldenberg said. “What’s his name? Dean, Don, Dino? Dana White! Better wake up, motherf—kers, next big thing is here, so get your checkbook ready, let’s make some money!”
Goldenberg clearly thought he cooked. Instead, he burned the kitchen down.
The clip went viral — and it eventually landed on White’s radar. The UFC boss responded on Instagram, and absolutely torched him.
“Worst fight of the night,” White wrote on Instagram. “Stunk the place up with his performance and then talks like he put on the Fight of the Night. The fight after his was a woman’s fight that made his fight look even shittier. [Smilla Sundell] blows Scrappy Douche outta the water!!”
Mission accomplished — just not the mission Goldenberg wanted.
Instead of earning a contract, Goldenberg likely punched his own ticket out of UFC consideration entirely. And at 33 years old with a 3-0 record, that door probably isn’t reopening.
Still, with all the attention he generated, maybe another promotion comes calling.
