“He’s got the wisdom” – Johnny Nelson on Derek Chisora world title shot

Published:

Johnny Nelson has given his thoughts on how a potential fight between Fabio Wardley and Derek Chisora would go.

Wardley vs Chisora seems like a possibility for ‘Del Boy’s’ 50th fight and Nelson did not write him off.

With Chisora yet to name an opponent for his 50th and likely final fight a few names have been thrown into the mix.

One name that continues to be paired with Chisora is newly crowned WBO world champion, Fabio Wardley.

Nelson spoke to Daily Mail Boxing about the contest.

“No disrespect to Derek, he’s a good gimme.

“Derek is limited, he’s got a few miles on the clock, it will be perfect for Derek to say this is my last hurrah, so that realistically could happen and you couldn’t blame either of them for doing that.”

Wardley became WBO interim world champion in October following his 11th-round win over Joseph Parker.

Parker was the biggest step-up of Wardley’s career to date and he was later upgraded to full WBO world champion after Oleksandr Usyk vacated the title.

“I think he has the wisdom to beat [Wardley], but I don’t think he has the youth or the pace to beat him, but he has the wisdom, without a doubt.”

As Nelson touched on, ‘Del Boy’ boasts far more experience as a professional than the man from Ipswich.

Chisora has boxed 346 rounds since his debut in 2007 in comparison to Wardley, with far fewer at 83.

Another name mentioned was Dillian Whyte, a man Chisora has faced twice and is yet to get a win against.

A trilogy with ‘The Bodysnatcher’ seemed the most likely route ‘Del Boy’ and Queensberry would take.

In an interview with Pro Boxing Fans, however, Chisora’s promoter, Frank Warren claimed the fight was not progressing.

Warren also explained that the plan for Chisora’s 50th fight was delayed.

“It’s dead [Chisora-Whyte 3].

“He could’ve been out in December but it didn’t happen so we’ve got to see what happens.

“We didn’t sign a contract. We agreed terms and then the terms got altered, not by us and so we didn’t sign the contract.”
