“El Matador” has something brewing.
Reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight champion Ilia Topuria has been sidelined since starching Charles Oliveira last June, a knockout that made him one of 11 two-division champions (watch highlights). Personal matters — including a messy divorce — have kept the Spanish superstar out of the cage, but it appears the wait for his return may finally be nearing an end.
Late last night, Topuria sent fans into a frenzy with a cryptic Instagram post.
“Celebrando la vida [Celebrating life]. Big news coming soon,” he wrote.
That was all it took to spark immediate speculation about when — and against whom — the champion will defend his belt.
One obvious option is a title unification bout against interim champion Justin Gaethje. The matchup has long been rumored, particularly for the promotion’s upcoming UFC White House event. However, political optics could complicate matters, as President Donald Trump reportedly isn’t thrilled about the possibility of an American star getting knocked out on such a stage.
If the White House card is off the table, International Fight Week (IFW) in July 2026 becomes the most logical landing spot. Topuria last competed during IFW in 2025, and the annual summer showcase is traditionally one of the UFC’s biggest events. A Topuria vs. Gaethje headliner would fit perfectly.
For now, fans are left refreshing their feeds and waiting for the champ to clarify what exactly “big news” means.
Hopefully, it isn’t his sparring session with Jake Paul.
