PGF World Season 9 Week 1 Full Results And Recap
The Las Vegas Kings have managed to kick off the season very well, and they find themselves 13 points clear at the top of the table already. The Philadelphia Phenoms and the Alabama Twisters netted 21 and 19 points respectively, so the fight for second-place is very close already. The gap to the Kings isn’t insurmountable, but they’ve got at least two matches as a buffer so next week will be pivotal. It’s also going to be important for the Colorado Wolverines; who had an absolutely disastrous start to their season. They didn’t score a single point across all 15 matches and they’re going to need to get some wins next week before they fall behind permanently.
Top Performers
It’s very much a team effort from the Las Vegas Kings but Jett Thompson is their main man. Thompson submitted both Andrew Kochel and Joshua Squires with rear-naked chokes; making for a massive week of 12 points. His teammate Austin Oranday hit a pair of ankle-locks against Travis Haven and Jayden Groner, but they weren’t the only members of the Kings to find themselves high on the leaderboard. Chuy Magana also registered a pair of leglock wins, heel hooking Anthony Salisbury and making an incredible comeback to submit Sam Schwartzapfel with an ankle-lock.
Both the Phenoms and the Twisters also had one competitor surging up the leaderboard with a pair of wins. The Phenoms’ Shawn Melanson is actually in second overall with 10 points after he submitted Oranday with an ankle-lock and scored big with an arm-triangle choke finish against Jayden Groner. Finally the Twisters’ Kevin Beuhring submitted Caleb Crump with a quick heel hook in the very first match of the night, before scoring a big win over Derek Rayfield with another heel hook.
Other Winners
Both of the final two members of the Las Vegas Kings earned points too; as Jared Fekete got a big-scoring rear-naked choke finish against Noah McCully and Cameron Hurd registered an upset when he caught Rayfield with a toehold. McCully got a submission win of his own when he heel hooked Brett Moyer, and he was given an additional 2 points when Jake Straus was disqualified for slamming him. Kyle Chambers and Kochel finished off the Phenoms’ points tally for the day; calf-slicing Anthony Salisbury and ankle-locking Jonathan Wilson respectively.
The Twisters might not have won any of the ‘blocks’ but most of their competitors got off the mark in one way or another. Straus scored the most outside of Melanson becausd he submitted Fekete with a rear-naked choke, but Elijah Carlton and Travis Haven aren’t far behind him. Carlton heel hooked Wilson in his first match and Haven caught Groner in a beautiful armbar in his, so both of them have stayed in the running.
