Report: Jon Jones vs. Alex Pereira in play for UFC White House main event, ‘Poatan’ vs. Ciryl Gane is UFC’s backup plan

On Friday, UFC CEO Dana White announced that Pereira has vacated his 205-pound title to clear way for a title fight between Jiri Prochazka and Carlos Ulberg at UFC 327 this April. In turn, it now sets Pereira up to make his awaited heavyweight debut his next time out. Plans are already in motion to have Pereira compete at UFC’s White House card, but discussions remain ongoing.

If UFC is unable to come to terms with Jones to make his return on the White House lawn then the backup plan is to have Pereira meet Ciryl Gane for the interim UFC heavyweight title. That would give Pereira the chance to become the first UFC fighter to win titles in three different weight classes. Of course, fight fans would rather see “Poatan” accomplish that feat against Jones than Gane.

“There have been some talks of that,“ said Helwani about a Pereira vs. Jones fight. “I think that would be a tremendous White House main event. I don’t know if they ultimately get it done. And I think if they don’t get it done what I’m hearing is they would do Alex vs. Ciryl Gane.”
