Teofimo Lopez vs Shakur Stevenson fight card hit by late blow

Published:

On January 31, at Madison Square Garden, New York City, Teofimo Lopez vs Shakur Stevenson headlines the “Ring 6”fight card live on DAZN Pay-Per-View. They will meet for Lopez’s lineal and WBO super lightweight titles.

This highly anticipated card has received a huge setback at the 11th hour, with the news that Carlos Adames has withdrawn from his WBC middleweight world title defence against Austin “Ammo” Williams, as per reports from The Ring and Dan Rafael.

Teofimo Lopez vs Shakur Stevenson undercard rocked by Carlos Adames withdrawal

Teofimo Lopez vs. Shakur Stevenson is rightfully the main event, with Shakur (24-0, 11 KOs) stepping up to the super lightweight division to challenge Lopez (22-1, 13 KOs) and become a four-weight world champion. Looking at the undercard, we have the return of Keyshawn Davis, while many were looking forward to seeing Adames (24-1-1, 18 KOs).

However, Team Adames have informed Matchroom Boxing, as the official promoter, that their fighter was ill and couldn’t move forward with the planned defence against Williams (19-1, 13 KOs).

All efforts are being made to find a short-notice replacement so Williams can stay on the card, with reports suggesting Wendy Toussaint (17-3, 7 KOs) could be the fighter to step in.

Adames was last seen in action against Hamzah Sheeraz in a fight that was ruled a split draw, with many feeling the Dominican fighter had done enough to win the bout.
It remains to be seen if a replacement can be finalised for Williams, who would have been eager to get this world title opportunity.
