“No Mercy” will be on ice for a bit — literally and figuratively.
Two-time Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Bantamweight champion Petr Yan will be out of action until at least summer 2026 after undergoing a minor back procedure, a development that was confirmed by his longtime manager, Danny Rubenstein.
“He had a minor procedure on his lower back that he went into the Merab fight with,” Rubenstein told MMA Junkie recently. “He’ll be ready in July.”
While the surgery is considered minor, it makes his performance last month even more impressive as the Russian standout powered through the issue and reclaimed the Bantamweight title with a dominant victory over Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 323, extending his winning streak to four straight.
The timing of the injury is unfortunate for fans, as Yan is widely regarded as one of the most skilled and entertaining fighters in the division. However, the layoff does allow both Yan and Dvalishvili ample time to recover and prepare for what appears to be an inevitable rubber match later this year.
If the promotion wants to get wonky, an interim title fight involving O’Malley isn’t out of the question — setting up a unification bout once Yan returns to full health. Whether the UFC goes that route remains to be seen.
For now, the priority is Yan’s recovery. Assuming everything goes according to plan, the Bantamweight king should be back in the title picture by midsummer — and when he returns, the division will once again have its most dangerous technician at full strength.
