WATCH: Algerian Judo Federation Suspends Two Female Athletes After On-Mat Scrap During Match

Published:

The Algerian Judo Federation has taken swift disciplinary action following an altercation that marred the final day of the Senior National Championship in Oran. Two female athletes competing in the women’s 172 lb (-78 kg) bronze medal match have been suspended and eliminated from competition.

The incident began during what appeared to be a routine exchange on the mat. The competitor in blue attempted a drop seoi nage technique, and both athletes landed on the mat. The judoka in blue then appeared to secure a collar choke against her noticeably taller opponent.

However, the situation quickly deteriorated when the athlete in the white gi rose to her feet, visibly agitated, and shoved her opponent with both hands to the chest.

What happened next shocked spectators and officials. As the competitor in blue began to stand, appearing apologetic for whatever had transpired, the athlete in white jumped onto her back, attempting what resembled a rear choke.

The maneuver devolved into a disorganized headlock, and rather than executing a proper submission, the white gi competitor drove her opponent’s face directly into the mat before striking her in the head again.

The Algerian Judo Federation’s organizing committee responded decisively to what they described as behavior that “went out of its established sporting framework.” Both athletes received immediate suspensions, with officials emphasizing that such conduct has no place in a sport built on fundamental principles of respect and self-control.

In a statement addressing the Algerian judo community, officials reminded practitioners of the sport’s foundational philosophy. Judo, established by Jigoro Kano, was never intended merely as physical movements aimed at victory, but rather as a school for self-discipline, respect for opponents, and moral elevation.

The federation stressed the importance of mutual respect, known as “Rei,” which forms the essential foundation that begins and ends every match. Officials noted that true victory in judo extends beyond earning medals to encompass the ability to control one’s emotions under the most difficult circumstances.

While acknowledging the severity of the incident, the federation characterized such behavior as isolated, stating these cases never reflect the values of Algerian clubs and their athletes.
